June CPI expected to rise ahead of SARB decision

South Africa’s June consumer inflation data, due for release this week, will be closely watched by markets and policymakers as it provides a key indication of whether recent fuel price increases are feeding into broader price pressures across the economy. The figures are expected to shape expectations ahead of the South African Reserve Bank’s upcoming Monetary Policy Committee meeting, where officials will assess the inflation outlook and the appropriate path for interest rates.

South African headline CPI is expected to have edged higher in June, with annual inflation forecast to rise to around 4.7% – 4.8% from 4.5% in May. The increase is expected to be driven primarily by higher transport costs following the sharp rise in fuel prices, while food inflation is likely to continue moderating on the back of favourable base effects and subdued fresh produce prices. Although transport has become the largest contributor to headline inflation in recent months, easing food price pressures should help limit broader inflationary pressures, suggesting that June may mark the peak of the current inflation cycle.

Attention will now turn to the SARB’s monetary policy decision, with the June CPI release providing important insight into whether higher fuel costs are beginning to generate broader second-round inflationary effects. While core inflation is expected to tick modestly higher, evidence of widespread price pressures remains limited. Nonetheless, elevated inflation expectations, ongoing geopolitical risks to oil prices and the SARB’s commitment to reinforcing its new 3% inflation target are likely to keep the MPC cautious, with the possibility of further policy tightening remaining firmly on the table.
