MTN Group Fintech shapes Africa’s next frontier

The fintech story in Africa has moved well beyond the question of whether digital financial services can transform the continent. That transformation is already unfolding in real time, reshaping how millions of people save, transact, borrow, invest and participate in the formal economy.

Today, perhaps the more pertinent question to ask is how quickly, and how responsibly, can Africa build the ecosystems, infrastructure and partnerships required to ensure that its digital financial future remains inclusive, trusted and sustainable.

These reflections were among many defining themes emerging from the three-day MTN Group Fintech Summit 2026, convened under the theme: Maximum Velocity, As One.” Bringing together regulators from the 14 markets in which MTN Group Fintech operates, alongside payment processors, fintech innovators, technology partners and industry stakeholders, the summit served as an important platform to examine not only the extraordinary pace of fintech development across the continent, but also the collective responsibility required to ensure that innovation translates into meaningful progress and positive societal impact.

The theme could not have been timelier. Africa needs velocity, but it also needs alignment.

Across the continent, fintech is increasingly central to economic growth and social development. Digital financial services are extending access to previously underserved communities, enabling e-commerce, supporting small businesses and creating new economic opportunities at scale. Mobile money, in particular, has become one of Africa’s most powerful engines of economic participation, facilitating billions of transactions and helping bridge longstanding gaps in financial inclusion.

Yet with scale comes responsibility.

As financial services become increasingly digital, interconnected and embedded in everyday life, the foundations upon which consumer confidence rests become as important as the innovations themselves. To this end, trust is the most precious resource.

For consumers to embrace digital financial services with confidence, they need assurance that their money and personal information are secure. In an environment where cyber threats continue to evolve in sophistication and frequency, cybersecurity is a non-negotiable fundamental pillar of the digital economy.

Equally important is investment in resilient digital infrastructure. Cloud capabilities, modern payments architecture and robust network systems are critical to ensuring that fintech platforms operate reliably, withstand disruptions and continue serving millions of consumers and businesses across diverse markets.

The summit also highlighted the delicate balancing act facing regulators and policymakers as digital finance continues to evolve.

Africa requires regulatory frameworks that protect consumers, safeguard financial stability and foster trust, while simultaneously creating space for innovation to flourish. Regulation that moves too slowly can leave consumers exposed to emerging risks. Conversely, overly restrictive frameworks can unintentionally hinder the development of contextually relevant solutions to some of the continent’s most pressing challenges.

This calls for regulatory agility and ongoing collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Such adaptability is becoming increasingly important as mobile money evolves beyond its original purpose of expanding financial access. The next phase of growth centres on improving financial health, empowering consumers with tools to save, invest and manage their finances more effectively, while responsibly extending digital credit and other financial services to underserved individuals and informal small businesses.

As one of Africa’s leading fintech platforms, MTN Group Fintech is actively evolving from being a provider of financial access into an intelligent digital ecosystem. This evolution is enabling consumers, merchants and businesses to unlock greater value through integrated financial and digital services designed to meet their changing needs.

“Our journey continues to evolve. We started by enabling customers to perform simple digital transactions such as purchasing airtime. From there, we expanded our capabilities by developing open APIs that allow partners to seamlessly integrate their services with our platforms, creating greater value in the process for customers and merchants,” said MTN Group Fintech CEO Serigne Dioum.

“Today, we are entering an intelligent new phase of growth, where the power of AI and Big Data can be harnessed to improve customer experience. As the MTN family, we firmly believe that our partners are integral to this journey, as we accelerate the execution of our strategy to improve people’s lives across the communities we serve.”

For nearly two decades, Africa has demonstrated through mobile money that it can leapfrog traditional banking infrastructure and create globally recognised models of financial inclusion.

The next phase of growth will require an equally ambitious leap, not only in technology adoption but also in how Africa positions itself within the future global digital economy.

Ultimately, no single organisation can build the continent’s digital future alone. Success will depend on collaboration across the spectrum. It is precisely for this reason that MTN Group Fintech brought together the continent’s key stakeholders under one roof to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships and align on a shared vision for Africa’s digital future.

The future of fintech will not be defined solely by the technologies that Africa deploys. It will be defined by the trust built around them, the ecosystems created to support them, and the collective ability to ensure that innovation delivers tangible value for consumers, businesses and communities alike.
