Sage simplifies payroll compliance by connecting employers directly to the South African Revenue Service

Sage, the leader in accounting, financial, human resources (HR) and payroll technology for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), has launched a new Monthly Employer Declaration (EMP201) integration, enabling employers to submit their monthly EMP201 returns directly from their payroll system to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The innovation removes one of the most manual and error-prone steps in payroll compliance. Businesses no longer need to extract, re-capture and submit payroll tax data by accessing SARS e-Filing. Instead, submissions can now be completed within a single, seamless workflow inside Sage’s Payroll solutions without requiring a separate accounting system integration.

For South African businesses, payroll compliance remains a high-risk process where small errors carry outsized consequences. Manual data capture introduces avoidable mistakes that can result in penalties, interest and operational disruption. According to Sage’s latest HR and Payroll Leaders’ Report, based on a survey of 1,000 HR and payroll professionals across the UK, Ireland and South Africa, 71% say their workload has increased year-on-year, while 52% report experiencing burnout, highlighting the growing pressure on teams managing complex compliance processes. Sage’s integration is designed to reduce that risk at source by embedding compliance directly into payroll.

“At its core, this is about trust in financial data and confidence in compliance,” said Yolandi Esterhuizen, Global Product Compliance Director at Sage. “Payroll professionals operate under constant pressure to deliver absolute accuracy. Sage research shows that 88% of HR and payroll professionals believe accurate and timely payroll processes are a critical driver of employee trust, reinforcing how important it is to get compliance right every time.”

“By removing manual re-entry, we are significantly reducing the risk of human error and changing how compliance is delivered,” Esterhuizen added. “This is what modern payroll should look like. Compliance should not exist as a separate administrative burden. It should be embedded into the system itself, guided, validated and seamlessly executed.”

Traditionally, employers have been required to extract Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), Unemployment Insurance Fund Contributions (UIF), Skills Development Levy (SDL) and Employment Tax Incentive (ETI) values from payroll reports, log into SARS e-Filing and manually capture those figures to complete their submissions. This fragmented process introduces duplication, consumes time and leaves room for costly errors.

Sage’s EMP201 integration connects payroll directly to SARS, using payroll-calculated values aligned with SARS records to deliver a guided and validated submission process. Employers only need to complete the final payment step via e-Filing.

The integration delivers meaningful impact for payroll teams and finance leaders, improving data accuracy, reducing duplicate work and streamlining submission cycles. Most importantly, it enables businesses to stay compliant with greater certainty. This shift comes as organisations look to reduce administrative burden and refocus on higher-value work. Sage’s research shows that 77% of HR leaders say technology is already reducing admin and freeing up time for more strategic priorities, underscoring the role of automation in modern payroll and HR operations.

With more than four decades of experience in regulatory compliance, Sage continues to lead through practical innovation that removes friction from critical business processes and helps organisations operate with confidence in an evolving compliance environment.
